Primary Research Photos

After choosing the two topics 'Concrete Jungle' and 'Folk Takes' from the prompts list I decided to go into the city to take some initial research photos. I made quick and simple cut outs of well known fairy tale characters to use as subjects in some of the photos. This was a fast way of generating ideas for composition and content. In the photos I took with the characters in them I tried to vary where the subject was within the scene, whether in the centre and quite big or smaller and off to the side. This gave me some ideas for the composition of my drawings. If I was to do this again I could improve by going on a variety of days so I could capture the characters in different lighting and weather conditions, as the background scenery would change with these too.

In the photos without the characters in them I tried to capture small parts of the city that would make good backdrops, or even objects to put within a scene. It was interesting to get into the mindset of taking in my surroundings properly, since I already walk through that area of the city pretty frequently, but never really take a close look at my surroundings.
