Investigation and Inspiration- The Continuation

The set project Investigation and Inspiration brief was to research a chosen subject and make a slide presentation on it. The subject I chose was 'Nature in the City'. I carried out research by going to green spaces in my area, recording photos and feelings as I went. Whilst taking a photo of a grand, old, tree I noticed a squirrel edging closer to me, and decided to film it. I filmed the squirrel for quite some time as it got very close to me and seemed very curious. After a few minutes of filming more squirrels turned up, and even when I left the tree to carry on photographing different areas of the park the squirrels kept following me for a little while. This experience had quite an effect on me, instantly after the interaction I felt such peace and joy. I love animals very much, so feeling some sort of connection to some wild ones felt quite special, even though I know full well that they were so tame because people have probably fed them in the past.

Even after leaving the park I still thought about the squirrels, so decided to draw them. This resulted in me actually drawing a lot of squirrels, so in a way this turned into a little project of it's own. After submitting the slide presentation I was still drawing the squirrels in varying mediums and colour ways. The first squirrel I drew over a rubbing I had actually made whilst in the park. I really like this effect, but because the rubbings are in such bright colours and the squirrel is such a simple line drawing the subject gets a bit lost. In the future I do want to draw on top of more rubbings but perhaps I could make the subject drawing more detailed, which more make it more bold. Alternatively I could change the colours. I had a book arts induction, and made a few different types of books in it. I chose one that I had made up of different types of sheets of paper and just drew squirrel upon squirrel. This was good drawing practice, as I drew every squirrel by eye, and I think I got better at drawing the form the further into the project I went. It was also very freeing as it wasn't a set uni project, so when exploring mediums that I wouldn't usually use I didn't put as much pressure on myself to make good drawings. I need to learn how to do this with set projects because I produce more, and better work when I'm not worrying about the outcome of the project itself. Also working in the book meant I was working on different coloured backgrounds, rather than in my sketchbook which is just white paper. I want to do this more often, maybe buy some different coloured sketchbooks or paint some of my sketchbook pages because the drawings definitely look different. Also when drawing on white space the paper looks very empty, so drawing just a single figure on a white background can make it look unfinished.
